If anybody ever manages to clone a Neandertal, they'll get a genetically "perfect" Neandertal, but how such a person would behave in "modern" society is another question altogether. There is an old suggestion, apparently with some substance, that if we kidnapped a cave-baby from 30,000 years ago and treated it as modern, it could become a computer programmer or airline pilot - they had our capacity, just not our knowledge. If the cloned Neanderthal lives from the outset fed on modern human food, living in a modern environment and culture, how do we know it will grow into a perfect specimen of Neanderthal?Doughttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02204909202506240971noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478664906099707316.post-29847227665374663662010-07-28T16:27:15.803-07:002010-07-28T16:27:15.803-07:00Earthandice and Joleen:
I agree with you about ...Earthandice and Joleen:

I agree with you about your sentiments here. The problem is, this is an issue that is not entirely "about" populations, although I've seen some debaters elsewhere bring this issue up. Nor is it entirely about racial attitudes, though there are people everywhere who assume that humans are "naturally" racist, violent, etc. This is about "doing something" just because the possibility is there(why do so many couples want to know the sex of a baby even before it's born? There are a variety of responses to this, too.) The opposing view is, "hey wait a minute! We're getting into unknown territory here! Let's slow down and see if this works." These are the people who want to set up some kind of "ethics" body to study the issues involved. The problem is,that it looks like there is going to someone somewhere, who will start trying to clone Neandertals(they're trying to clone woolly mammoths which would supposedly inhabit some "Pleistocene Park" in NE Siberia; this effort comes from Japan). Such efforts are going on despite ethical queasiness about cloning woolly mammoths. It's bound to happen, sooner or later, and with or without ethical committee supervision. And this is what I, and a lot of other people, feel extremely queasy about.
ANne GAnne Gilberthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03045500116098233731noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478664906099707316.post-64225497036131904602010-07-28T08:14:09.885-07:002010-07-28T08:14:09.885-07:00Considering both the high level of racism against ...Considering both the high level of racism against other people, and the common practice of using high apes such as chimpanzees as test subjects, the idea of cloning a neanderthal does not seem like something the human race is ready for really.Joleenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07589801600522933584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478664906099707316.post-6277560579633431832010-07-28T08:10:18.247-07:002010-07-28T08:10:18.247-07:00I also saw the article on John Haws blog. I have read some literary fiction in the past, and I will continue to do so from time to time. It's just that most of it just isn't very interesting to me. AS for "beautiful writing", I think that if someone can tell a good story and write, well "stylishly" that's a plus. But IMO, and this is just IMO, I look first for "sotry", preferably one that "hooks" you right away. Which is what I'm trying to achieve. If the writing turns out to be "beautifu", that will be a plus. And really, I don't "judge a book by its genre, just by whether it's reasonbly plotted and decently written. But again IMO a lot of literary fiction seems to me to be just "navel gazing".Anne Gilberthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03045500116098233731noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478664906099707316.post-56234074275079260512010-07-04T07:59:51.500-07:002010-07-04T07:59:51.500-07:00My opinion on all this has always been that an int...My opinion on all this has always been that an interesting story that has good characters in it and is well told always has high cultural value. For instance, I rank Stephen King as avery good writer, and Dostoyevsky (spelling?) too. But on the other hand, I definitely believe that some books are just plain better than others. What I mean is that if a book is interesting all the way through, but has no moment that genuinely touches you, and makes you go That's so beautiful, it's not as good as a book that's as interesting and does. You say you don't read a lot of literary fiction, but I'm a little more broad-minded; I don't go by the genre, just by the individual book. It doesn't make sense to me to judge a book by its genre. Also, on the subject of some books being better than others, I've noticed that some books are disliked because they aren't that well-written (like cheesy thrillers), while others are disliked because the disliker doesn't understand them. To illistrate my point, what is students' most ? That they don't understand what anyobdy's saying. They don't like him because they don't understand him.

What makes me want to read a book is a beautiful style of writing and interesting people in it. That's what matters to me. A good story doesn't hurt, of course; but it's not my main priority. After all, I don't read Raymond Chandler to find out whodunnit, I read him to enjoy his style of writing and the wonderful mood.Mickehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11883688868034027203noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478664906099707316.post-16623813089540803092010-06-24T22:05:47.339-07:002010-06-24T22:05:47.339-07:00Anonymous:

If I just announce that I'm adding a theme to my blogroll, I don't think I need ha have an "opinion" about it. OTOH if I see something abut Neandertals, or medieval England, or something else that fits into my thems, I am much more likely to express myself about it. Especially if whoever writes what they're writing, and does an especially fine job of explaining, or makes a particularly bad mistake.
Anne GAnne Gilberthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03045500116098233731noreply@blogger.com
